For those of you who know Gideon you know he has always been our easiest keeper. Scrubby little QH/ suprise appaloosa mix who came in overweight, very qualified to be a lesson horse, and with wonderful teeth and feet. The vet and farrier never had any trouble with him. He worked literally every lesson and went to shows without any complaint. He is a favorite for the helpers since he follows instructions without any fuss. The first week of October he came up lame in a lesson, without any obvious issue, swelling, or heat we assumed abscess. Fast forward two weeks and he was now even unsound at the walk. Everyone became very worried and we rushed out the vet. Xray’s found a coffin bone cyst, which everyone including the vet had never seen. Our wonderful vet had to consult his colleagues to even determine prognosis. They decided to treat him like a Navicular hose. Pain management, injections, and corrective shoeing to see what would work. It was a very trail and error type method or go in guns blazing and do all of the treatments together with probable success. We decided after much research and conversations with the vet and farrier to start with trying to get him sound barefoot. Go from least to most and find what suits our boy best. We immediately started him on the Equivibe and had him magnawaved as well. He did a week of equioxx as well as thrush management daily. He started walking sound in the paddock and had a better overall demeanor. So we started him on a 15 min a day exercise routine that encouraged him to walk only on different surfaces, over poles, and up hills. He currently gets daily Equivibe and is waiting at the gate ready to go stand for his treatment. Last week he started trotting a few lines sound. This Sunday November 12th he worked with a rider for 15 mins in the arena and we were over the moon. Five weeks from our terrible diagnoses and Equivibe and maganwave( along with the careful exercise) have our boy on the right track! We can see him feeling better and walking more heel first. He loves his Equivibe sessions and we cant wait to get him back to doing what he loves with his kids. Our next step is farrier intervention so stay tuned for more of our sweet boy’s recovery!
